What is Chocolate Gravy?

  • Chocolate gravy is a Southern staple that has been around for a long time. It’s creamy, rich, chocolatey, delicious, and simple to make!
  • It’s a cross between chocolate pudding and chocolate sauce. Some call it a soppin chocolate.
  • It is made like most gravy. It consists of fat, flour, and milk but where it differs is the sugar and cocoa. You can make it thick or thin, whichever you prefer.

Where did Chocolate Gravy Originate?

  • According to legend and the Oxford Encyclopedia of Food and Drink in America, they suspect chocolate gravy originated between trade between Spanish Louisiana and the Tennessee Valley. It was introduced as a Mexican-Style breakfast chocolate to the Appalachian area of Tennessee. They called it Chocolate Gravy.
  • Some say the origin of chocolate gravy came from resourceful wives using ingredients they had on hand.
  • Fun Fact: It’s been said that Elvis Presley loved chocolate gravy, and it wasn’t unusual to see it served at Graceland.

How to make Chocolate Gravy?

This is a great recipe for a beginner cook. I learned how to make it as a child.

The first thing you want to do is gather your ingredients.

Next, combine all your dry ingredients in a bowl and mix with a whisk until there are no lumps.

Melt the butter in a skillet or saucepan over medium heat.

After the butter has melted, add the milk and stir.

When the milk mixture is hot, add the dry ingredients to the milk and butter mixture. Stir or whisk to combine and remove all the lumps, if there are any.

Continue to cook and stir (to prevent scorching) on medium heat until the mixture thickens.

If the mixture is too thick, you can add milk or water to desired thickness.

Remove from heat and add vanilla, and stir.
