3-Ingredient Buttermilk Biscuits

What is the best pan to bake buttermilk biscuits in?

A cast iron skillet, of course. I’m kidding…sorta.

You can bake biscuits in any pan, but I prefer a cast iron skillet.

I’ve baked buttermilk biscuits in various pans over the years, and my absolute favorite is an iron skillet. A cast iron pan creates a wonderful crust for these delicious biscuits.

Here are my top 3 favorite biscuit pans!

    1. Cast Iron Skillet – I typically use a 10.5″ or a 12″ iron skillet. (Those are my two favorite sizes.)

    1. Round Cake PanNordic Ware round cake pans are great cake pans, but you can also use these wonderful cake pans for baking buttermilk biscuits. They are heavy-duty and will last you for a long time.

    1. Sheet Pan – A sheet pan has many uses in the kitchen and is another option to bake biscuits in. I use my sheet pans almost as much as my skillet. My favorite sheet pan is the Nordic Ware quarter sheet.

Other Tools for making Buttermilk Biscuits

Here are a few tools needed to make buttermilk biscuits. Although some of them aren’t necessary, they can be beneficial.

Pan – See suggestions listed above.

Mixing Bowl

Pastry Blender – This isn’t necessary, but a pastry blender does make it easier to combine the flour and shortening. It’s a good tool to have in your kitchen. You can use a fork or your fingers if you don’t have one.

Dough Whisk – This is on my list to buy. You use this to incorporate the dry and wet ingredients. Dough whisks are great for doughs you don’t want to overmix. Works well for biscuits and pizza dough.

Biscuit Cutter – I didn’t have a biscuit cutter for years and cut my biscuits with a glass, but I will say I love my biscuit cutter. It cut’s through the dough so much easier and also works great for cutting out cookies.

Bench Scraper – A bench scraper is a staple tool in my kitchen. My late father-in-law made me one years ago, and I use it all the time. A bench scraper works great for cutting biscuit dough, but I honestly have never used it for that (but I’m going to the next time I make biscuits). I mainly use mine to clean up the leftover flour on my countertop. Works like a charm.

Parchment Paper Sheets – I like to use parchment paper for ease of cleanup. There are so many uses for parchment paper.

How do you make buttermilk biscuits in a cast iron skillet?

The first thing you want to do is preheat your oven to 425.

Prepare your pan by adding 2 or more tablespoons of canola oil, vegetable oil or bacon grease.

Next, add 2 cups of self-rising flour to your bowl.

Add 3 tablespoons of Crisco shortening and cut with a pastry blender until it becomes crumbly. You will want it to look like this.

Then you are going to add 1 1/4 – 1 1/2 cups of buttermilk. Stir until combined.

I like to take parchment paper sheets and lay them on my countertop to make clean-up easier. Dust it with flour. (to prevent biscuit dough from sticking).

Place the dough mixture on a floured surface (parchment paper or countertop). Dust dough with flour to prevent it from sticking to your hands.

Pat dough until it is about 1 1/2 inches thick. I don’t use a rolling pin. I pat it out with my hands.

Next, take your biscuit cutter (if you don’t have one, you can use a glass) and begin cutting out your biscuits. I put a bit of flour on my biscuit cutter to prevent the dough from sticking.

Cut as many biscuits as you can. For this recipe, I usually cut 6 on the first cut. Then take what dough scraps you have left, pat it out to 1 1/2 inches thick, and cut again. Repeat until you have no dough left. You should have about 8-9 biscuits overall.

The amount of biscuits you cut out will depend on how thick or thin you pat your dough out and the size of your biscuit cutter.

NOTE: You can use a bench scraper to cut your biscuits and just cut them into squares.

Take your cut biscuit and gently rub it in the greased pan and flip the biscuit over (greased top facing up). Place biscuits in pan. Repeat this step until all biscuits are in your skillet.

It’s okay for the sides of the biscuits to be touching. You actually want them to touch. This will allow them to rise taller as they cling to each other while baking.

Bake in 425-degree oven for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
