My Personal Journey with Rosacea
I had rosacea for several years before I was diagnosed with it. My husband would often comment on how red my face was. It would be really apparent when I was hot, drinking hot beverages, stressed, or indulging in a glass of wine, plus my skin had become hypersensitive. I canโt tell you how much money I wasted trying to find products that I could use on my sensitive, red skin, often just making it worse.
My dad was diagnosed with rosacea, and I ended up getting diagnosed a year later. (Apparently, rosacea runs in families). My dermatologist prescribed me Metrogel and Azelaic acid. Oh, and the antibiotic doxycycline used to treat rosacea made me flare. Good times!
I have subtype 1 rosacea, where the skin on my face can be easily irritated. I have to be careful with what products I put on my face. Sometimes small blood vessels can be visible with subtype 1 rosacea. I haven’t noticed that with mine so much, but I have redness on my cheeks, and my nose is often red. Oh, and my cheeks sometimes will be itchy. I asked my dermatologist about the itchiness, and he said it wasnโt unusual to have it with rosacea.
The photos below show how sensitive my skin reacts to products. In the first two photos, I didnโt realize I still had neck cream residue on my hands, and my face wasnโt too happy about it. A rosacea flare triggered by accident! The last photo is from a new natural makeup wipe I had triedโthis is why patch-testing is a must!
The flares are the worst. It feels like my face is extremely chapped and on fire. Even my safe skincare and make-up products light me up when I’m flaring.
As a rosacea sufferer, I recommend finding an online community where others are going through the same things you are. The support will be invaluable on your journey with rosacea. Likewise, youโll learn all sorts of tips and tricks from skincare to help with rosacea flares and general skin care. Facebook and Reddit have some great ones.

Tips When Applying Makeup for Rosacea
- Stick to your regular skincare routine (check out the best facial cleansers for rosacea)and introduce one product at a time! Observe how your skin reacts to the new product; if you notice any irritation, discontinue use immediately!
- When covering significant redness, you want to be careful not to pick a light foundation. For example, if it’s too light, the redness you’re trying to cover will peak through, leaving you looking chalky. Choose a shade darker and warmer than you’d typically wear; in addition, this will help you from looking ashy or chalky. If you decide to go a shade or two darker, be mindful that you’ll spend more time blending your jawline and neckline area.
- Apply foundation with a damp beauty blender in a blotting motion. Above all, donโt rub; this will irritate your tender skin.
- Use a primer to smooth out your skin. Check out the ones recommended above.
- Above all, wear sunscreen! I mentioned my favorite above. If you missed it, itโs this one.
- ALWAYS use caution when trying new products to prevent flare-ups and avoid reactions.
- Less is More: Avoid layering too many products, which can irritate sensitive skin. Stick to lightweight formulas and build up coverage gradually.
- Test New Products on a Small Area: Always patch-test on your neck or behind the ear before fully applying a new foundation or skincare product.
- Set Makeup with a Rosacea-Friendly Powder: Use a finely-milled, fragrance-free setting powder to lock in your foundation without clogging pores or causing irritation.
- Avoid Alcohol-Based Setting Sprays: These can dry out your skin and trigger flare-ups, so stick to hydrating or calming mists instead.
