If this is your first time knitting cables, you may find it a bit challenging. I’m a visual learner and taught myself how to knit cables by watching YouTube videos. I also subscribed to online classes like SkillShare, Craftsy, and CreativeBug.
Here are a few cable knitting videos that may help you. If you find yourself stuck on a knitting project with a new technique, google and YouTube is your best friend. It’s also nice to have a dictionary of knit stitches for reference.
What supplies do you need to get started in cable knitting?
I’m assuming you have the basic knitting supplies, but if you want to knit cables, you’ll need a few extra supplies. Here are a few of my favorite knitting supplies.
- Cable Stitch Holder – These Clover U-Cable Stitch Holders are designed to help you add twists to a pattern by crossing a group of stitches over one another. The holders have a U-shaped area that helps to hold the stitches in place, making it easier to work with them. Made from durable plastic, these stitch holders are easy to use and help to produce neat results.
- Knitting Needles – I have several knitting needle sets, but these are my favorites! Yes, they are an investment, but they are so worth it!
- Cable Needle – I’ve not used these myself, but from what I’ve read, they would be great for those new to cable knitting.
- Tapestry Needle – These are my favorites, and I love the container they come in.

Juniper Wishing Scarf
This beauty was designed by Tiny Owl Knits. You can find her on her website or Etsy. She even has a book called Woodland Knits, which includes this pattern and many other enchanting patterns. The Juniper Wishing scarf has three intertwined cables, and if you love fringe, you will go bonkers over this one! It uses one whole skein for the fringe! You can omit the fringe and make it unisex. It uses bulky yarn and size US 11 (8mm) needles 10″ long.
Grey Cabled Scarf
A cabled scarf with an interesting seed stitch pattern will surely get you some compliments. This free knit pattern from Lion Brand makes it easy, as well! They also have a kit you can purchase. An experienced knitter will love this pattern.
