Golden brown cornbread fresh from oven.

Southern Cornbread

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • ½ cup all purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 egg
  • cup buttermilk
  • 1 tbsp bacon grease or vegetable oil

Instructions
 

  • Preheat your oven 425°F
  • Put 1 T. bacon grease in your iron skillet and place in oven while it preheats.
  • Comine all ingredients in a large bowl and mix well.
  • Once oven is preheated and your iron skillet is smoking hot, remove skillet from oven.
  • Pour some of hot grease in your cornbread mixture and stir.
  • Sprinkle some cornmeal (about 1 tsp.)on your hot iron skillet. This will help prevent the cornbread from sticking.
  • Pour cornbread mixture in hot skillet. It will sizzle!
  • Place in oven and bake about 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
  • Remove from oven and remove cornbread from skillet by turning it out on a plate. Slice and serve.
